false criminal background check

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? ohio

I lost a good job offer because a background check company included someone elses results in my criminal report. The results included a mans that is currently in prison. And even a different middle name. The company failed to compare ss number and race, causing me the job. If I had the job for 20 years I have lost over $500,000.00 because of them. HireRight advertise on their website a thorough investigation. What a Joke.

Background check reports, just like credit reports, often have errors. The errors are frequently due to a person sharing the same name with someone else and, unfortunately, many times the someone else has a criminal history.

Because errors are common, it is important to check your credit reports with regularity and do your own background check of yourself, so that you can spot errors and work to get the errors corrected.

Getting errors corrected is time-consuming and often frustrating. During the time you are working to get the errors corrected, you can make prospective employers aware of what they might find when they do a background or a credit check on you - tell them of the errors that are showing up and inform them that you are working on getting these errors corrected.

how do you do a background check?

I see various services online that you pay for - are any of them reliable? how can the average person get a background check done that would include criminal activity and asset checks?

Some of the background check companies are reliable, some are less so. All use public information that you can gather yourself - although this can be time-consuming and sometimes difficult.

Because it is time-consuming to check court records, property records, education records, driving records, credit records, and so on, most employers will use a background check company, and the background check reports may include some errors. All background check companies will require paying for their service.

There was a thread posted here not too long ago that you can check out, photog_mom, that addresses background checks in some depth.

See http://forum.freeadvice.com/libel-slander-defamation-88/veromi-violating-my-privacy-461049.html. In post #12, I provided some information on background check sites and how the background information is gathered and used. The thread may help you.

Good places to start on your OWN background check, however, is to use a basic search engine and see what comes up on a search of your name, and to order your credit reports from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. There is a class action suit, currently, against one of these credit reporting agencies over the failure to include dates on the listed accounts. Other errors may appear on your reports that you can correct by following the instructions provided with the reports.

As I said, errors are common. This is especially true if you happen to have the same name as someone else. Searches are often conducted using names only, and information included in background reports is not always verified (although the fact that some information may be in error is noted on the reports).
