What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
North Carolina.....
This Wednesday ended up at my church of 24 years with
two vehicles....decided to leave one until the next
morning.
Returned Thursday around 10 a.m. to find the vehicle
gone...and the pastor approaching, apologizing for
having the vehicle towed....followed him to the impound
lot where HE attempted to pay for the tow...I did not
allow him to do so...he stuffed the money in my shirt
and I returned it to the church secretary....
New pastor, knew me well but did not know my vehicle,
called his local police chief who (here gets fuzzy) that
the vehicle belonged to a 'possible' sex offender and to
use his discretion as to whether to tow it or not...would
not disclose my name....
I had been charged, tried and found not guilty of a sex crime,
caught between a child custody/visitation issue.....
AND, I discussed this with my pastor.
Proceeded to property in the next town to find that the police
chief there had a bolo for me from the previous police chief....
had gone down a street where I owned property...approached a
person there with a flyer, with my picture on it, wanting to know
if he knew me...yes he did...had he seen me...yes, the day before...
(Back up arrived and observed the situation) DID HE KNOW THAT I
was on the sexual offender registry (I am not)...Was told by the
person approached that he knew that I was not. And he wanted to
know WHY my vehicle was parked in a church parking lot?
And to contact him, IF he saw me again.
I immediately took the person to whom he talked and asked him what
he wanted/needed from me. He pretended to not know what I was
talking about, denied making the statement about the sex offender
registry. Then I showed him the bolo....He took it looked at it like
it was something he had never seen...Started to fold it and keep
it, and I took it from his hand.
Stalled, talked around the issue...and somewhere in the conversation,
said well yes he did talk to this person and while talking to him was
told over the phone/radio? that it was a mistake....DID NOT bother
to tell the person he was talking to about the 'mistake'.
I asked him how this mistake could have happened and how it could
be prevented from happening again...He blathered on and on about
drug dealers and watching parked vehicles for drug activity...etc..
total BS....
I want to be able to travel in my community without being harassed,
slandered, and/ or intimidated. What if anything is my next step...
I do not want to be stopped by some other police office who does
not know that this was a 'mistake'.
