Is it legal for life insurance companies to ask for background info regarding prior convictions? How many years can they go back?

Yes, it's legal. Life insurance applications are not the same for all companies. I worked for an ins. co. & besides reviewing our own application, I reviewed for various reasons applications of other ins. companies. Most would ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime within the past 10 yrs. or past 15 yrs. If yes, complete details would need to be given. What questions are asked on an application depends on the ins. co. Some also do background checks - again whether they do depends on the co., the amt. of ins. applied for & other reasons.
