What is the name of your state? MN

Recently my mother-in-law passed away. Her only daughter had the responsibility for her "estate" for the last twelve years. Mother-in-law has been in a nursing home during past eight years. At one time, I had seen several life insurance policies in "mom's" papers. Upon her death, only one $2000. policy was known to daughter....leaving a pile of funds to be paid for the funeral. Is there a way to find out if a policy having cash value was cashed in during mothers lifetime? Is there a way to find out if any other life insurance policies exsist? Thanks -What is the name of your state?

Well, what would be the reason why you need to know the answer?

Did you expect to be the bene of any of the policies?

You could start by writing to the larger insurance companies to inquire if there are any policies. You would need to include the person's full name, address, and social security number, as well as enclosing a copy of the death certificate.

If there's a probate case open, the personal representative/executor should be the one to write, enclosing also a copy of the Letters of Administration, called Letters Testamentary or something similar in some states.

The companies probably would not be able to tell you if a policy had been cashed in (without more specific information such as a policy number), but can tell you if there are current policies payable.
