Contact the insurance company to find out if you or anyone else had been named as beneficiary of the policy (but you probably weren't). The insurance company made a mistake in contacting you, since if no beneficiary was named they should have (and eventually did) make the check payable to the decedent's estate so that it can properly be distributed to the correct legal heirs (the decedent's wife and children). Sorry that you will probably not be able to get any of this money.
