I completely agree... BUT

Now we have a welfare system that will support these folks once all their money is spent on plastic surgery. Does the state (which has stuck its nose into everyone's business by providing welfare) not now have a need to stick its nose in further by taking some steps to prevent those who surely will fall to the welfare rolls from making a ridiculous financial decision?

I suggest you stay far, far away from the NYC trial courts. Many judges think they know what's best for the litigants and are happy to blow up a settlement due to something in their own head. (Hell, even the SDNY judges are not immune).
