What is the name of your state? Florida,

I have a friend who has a 15 year old daughter by a man that she never
married, although he signed the birth certificate, and has willingly, but
not always, paid child support. He has also helped raise the child, sought
visitations with the child, and participates in her activities as her father, and
the father and child have loved each other very much. Horribly, the father
was murdered this year, one day before Thanksgiving. The man's family,
for some unknown reason, is withholding the name of the Insurance co.
that the father had a life insurance policy with, naming his only daughter as sole beneficiary. The man's death is being treated as a homicide and the father of the man told the lead investigator that the man had a life insurance policy. How can my girlfriend find out the name of the insurance co., without
hiring a lawyer?

So how does the friend even know for sure that daughter was named as beneficiary--is this what the father told her? That may or may not be true. He should have also mentioned the name of the insurance company when he told her.

You will NOT be able to get that information without hiring a lawyer, but it would be well worth it to get one.
