Question

18 yr old dating 30 yr old - parents

YOUR STATE NAME - Michigan

Parents of 18 yr old girl want her to stop dating 30 yr old guy. parents of 18 year old girl say they will get a restraing order to stop her from dating this person. 18 year old is prepared to move out over this. Can the parents do anything in a legal manner prohibiting her from dating him. Can they have a restraining order placed without her consent to prevent the dating. Is there any legal rights they have? State is Michigan. I am a friend of the 18 year old, age 21.

My response:

The parents would like to think that they can do something, but it's too late for them. The age of adulthood in the United States is age 18, and has been so since March 4, 1971 (See Amendment 26 United States Constitution). Assuming the 18 year old is mentally competent, the parents can do nothing, and if they press the point, a judge will tell them the same thing.

In summary, it will be the parent's waste of money and time.

I agree with the above

Let her go, she is an adult. If my daugther does not want to abide by my house rules, she would have to leave.
