Becoming a Legal Guardian

What is the name of your state? Virginia

My wife works with a 17-year old girl- she turns 18 in 6 months. She was sent out of her home in Tennessee at 13 to live with another family in Texas. Her mother had her removed from school last year, and she subsequently followed a boy here to Virginia. The boy in question is in trouble with the law, beats her, takes her car and her money from work, and she has nowhere to go. My wife and I have discussed becoming her legal guardians to help get her life back on track, get her education, and save her money.

What are the pros and cons to becoming this child's legal guardian? What are our alternatives?

A: If you have to ask these questions on an internet forum, then I suggest you do not become her guardian.

If you still are thinking about it, go to a probate attorney to discuss this major, huge undertaking.

Or I could let this child rot in the hell she has found herself in. I asked here as a starting point, an initial question to start getting some ideas about what I should do or not do. I appreciate your quick, concise, "I do not give a damn about the situation" answer.

Thanks for you help.
