Changing Birth parent and nameI was born in Illinois and now live in California. Several years ago, I found out that the father listed on my birth certificate is fictional because my mother was involved with a married man. The affair was ongoing and my brother was also a product of this. We both have this fictional father listed on our birth certificates and want to put our real father's name there instead. He died in 1976 and his wife is the one who forced my mother to tell us the truth because she felt we had a right to know. Our father was very involved with my brother and I but we only knew him as "Uncle ___", a supposed family friend. As of now, all his children know the truth and several are close to us. Is there a way to get this fictional name off our certificates and put our true father's there? Our mother died last year but I'm sure that his children who are close to us would sign affidavits as to this being the truth. Thank you |

| What would be the point? Since you were born in IL, you'd have to contact the clerk of the county in which you were born and start there.

| The point would be that it bothers me that I have a man's name on my birth certificate that never even existed. Can you imagine if one of my descendents wanted to do a family tree and kept looking for a "Leighton" that went nowhere? Even if I could only change it to my mother's maiden name, it would be better than having a ficticious one. I don't know, I guess it's just one of those things that no one will ever understand. Thanks for the suggestion. |
