What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hopefully this makes sense.

2 children in shared custody- ages 6 and 13

The boyfriend of their mother is verbally, emotionally and physically abusive to her in front of them, however he has yet to turn his attention/anger at them.

Instead of having to wait, as per cps, for him to do something directed at them, is there a way legally that this abusive person can be made to stay away from them while they are at mom's home?

Prove that he is an immediate danger to the children and on their behalf get a restraining order against boyfriend for them IF you are the other parent.
