Child's Name ChangeI live in the state of Indiana. I have a daughter who is currently 5 years old. I am trying to find the best route to take. My daughter carries my maiden name because I was not married when I became pregnant and delivered her. Her biological father abuses drugs and spends most of his time in jail. Therefore, his name is NOT on her birth certificate and he has never seen her and I wouldn't allow it right now anyway. He has committed violent crimes. I am now married to a wonderful man and have 2 other children with him. He has been there for her since her birth, he even cut her cord at birth. She knows him as Daddy and has no clue that he is not her biological father. She has been asking why her name is different from the rest of us. I do not feel like she is ready to know the truth. I would like to change her last name to match our last names, and she does too. Since there is no man on her birth certificate, what are the procedures to do this name change and will we have to contact her biological father? Please help! |
