cohabitation & insurance settlement in louisiana

What is the name of your state?
Louisiana
we lived together for 1.5 years, he recieved an insurance settlement for 20,000 & bought me a bedroom set for 2,400. I worked & he sat home with my 2 boys (not by him). he went to jail for domestic violence against me. since he deposited the settlement in my account & the bedroom set was bought with a check from my account does he have any legal right to it? He wants it back & says I owe him the money. It was a gift & he never payed any of the bills while we lived together.
