What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? alabama
i have a friend who said today that his former girlfriend went to the courthouse toda (friday) and changed her last name to his. they have not lived together for about two months, is tis legal. they where engage at one point. but she broke it off. we think she is lying so that she can get more money out of him. can legally do this since she lives in another county and has residince there as well. what should he do about this problem since she coming down to get the rest of her stuff this wednesday.
please advise me on what tell him about this problem. thanks

Anyone can legally change their last name to basically anything that they want.

She may be thinking that by doing that it would help her assert a common law marriage...but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense in this circumstance.
