I live in Oregon which is not a community property state. What exactly does that mean? I know in a community property state all properties acquired during the marrige is divided 50-50 at the time of the divorce. What happens in a divorce when it is not a community property state? Thank you

Oregon is an "equitable distribution " state which means all assets should be divided fairly......doesnt always mean 50/50. Luckily in Oregon the role of homemaker is recognized as equal to that of wage earner. Reasons for splits other than 50/50 might include one person gaining a degree or persuing a career while the other person worked and supported, In those cases the career or degree may be considered an asset and some of its worth may be factored in the judges decision.
