What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana
Is there an overall legal definition of spouse in Louisiana law? I know there are marriage limits. But does the term spouse have one and only one legal meaning (a married partner) for all state business, or could it be an unmarried or commonlaw partner?

Louisiana does not recognize common-law marriage.

No such thing as common law in Louisiana anyway. They use civil law.

Louisiana recognizes common law marriages, therefore a spouse could be someone married "at common law".
