| Disposing of Mother's Property What is the name of your state? New Jersey.
After a lengthy dispute with Social Services, I finally got Mom on Medicaid and admitted to a nursing home with Alzheimer's.
She gave me a general, durable power of attorney dated a few years before she went into the nursing home. I used that power of attorney to dispose of her assets to satisfy Medicaid.
Now the only asset left is her 1992 Toyota which has been parked in my driveway for the last two years. It doesn't run and if there is any value to a scrap dealer, I will forward the proceeds to Mom's nursing home account.
I called NJ DMV to find out how to dispose of the car. They said I would have to transfer the registration to myself and then dispose of it as my asset. This would mean transfer fees, waiting in that interminable DMV line, and possibly having to cough up insurance money even though the car will never be driven.
Can't I just fill out the "sale" section of the Title Certificate and sign it with "My Name, POA for Mom's Name' and then turn that over to the scrap dealer?
Thanks in advance for your help. |
