Educational Neglect

We live in North Carolina. There is a woman who has let her two girls miss over 15 days of school so far this year, 35 last year and 45 the year before. The school will not do anything to her. The girls do not have health problems and the mother will not have meeting with the school. Could she lose custody of her children for this? The father has visit the school at least three times trying to get the school to do something about this with no avail.Isn't the school bound by law to do something about this? I have reported this to Social Services yesterday including the fact that her mother and boyfriend have drug related backgrounds and they live in a 3 bedroom home with 9 people. I got an email back asking about the drug background as if this s.s. person didn't even care about the educational neglect. Is there anything that can be done about this woman if the father does not have the money to file for custody?

As a senior member who has spent a little bit of time on this forum, it becomes easy to recognize certain situation. You are not just an uninvolved concerned person...

eta: As I said before - butt out. Let the father of the children deal with this situation. You are not helping.

I am the father's mother. I am their grandmother.

One of my children would miss at least 15-20 days of school per school year due to his asthma when he was younger. He was one of the top performers at the school and commonly tested "off the chart" on various standardized tests.

If you want to help your son, hire an attorney for him.

And, remember, this woman is 1/2 of your grandchildren, and the person whom your son saw fit to be a mother to his children.

If I could afford a lawyer I wouldn't be here right now. I am in a wheelchair and live on a fixed income. Its people like you in the legal system that let children fall through the cracks and not get them the help they need because it's just easier to say "butt out" and just ignore the issue. I wouldn't be on this website posting just out of spite or nosiness. Yet, again another weakness of the educational system and people who are suppose to help the children; operating on assumptions. My original questions still have not been answered. So I hope that someone on this website can help us that truly wants to help and not hinder.

This is your son's fight. You are doing him no favors by pursuing this.

I am not pursuing anything. I am just trying to help him find out what he can do since countless arguments with his ex-wife and visits to the girls schools have gone nowhere. I know my place in this situation and would do nothing without his consent or him asking me to do so. I'm not one of "those" mothers.

Your son can document the problems and then take the issue to court and request a modification of custody. He really should get a consult with a local attorney to see what his realistic cahnces of prevailing are.
