Engagement ringWhat is the name of your state? Maryland My ex fiance lives in Va and broke up with me. I would like my engagement ring back. Which state has jurisdiction and do I have to prove fault in order to get the ring. |

Generally, engagement rings are conditional gifts. The condition is marriage. Therefore, if she broke up with you, then she should return the ring since the condition will not take place. |

| It is my understanding that engagement rings are conditional gifts. Although she might argue that the condition was her acceptance of the proposal, the court would probably see that the condition was actual marriage. If you sue, you have a much greater chance of getting the ring than she does, especially since she was the one who broke off the engagement (a "fault-based" ruling). On the other hand, even if it is a "no-fault" ruling, most places will say that the purchaser gets the ring back. It's a sticky situation, but it seems that the law is really on your side as the purchaser of the ring. |
