Family dispute over eviction situation

What is the name of your state? NY

My wife and I live in our house with our 2 children. Approximately 2 months ago an mutual friend of ours became separated from their spouse and we allowed our friend to move in with us. Since then it has become a strain on the family and I think that it is time for this person to move out of the house and find somewhere else to go. My wife disagrees and refuses to ask them to leave or support my decision to ask them to move on.
It is my understanding that I would have to go through the eviction process to legally have this person forced out of the house - is this correct?
And if so, could my wife contest that? She is part owner of the house which was purchased shortly after we were married.
