family law


What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? ct. my friend is having trouble finding anyone to help her. She has been and lived with a guy for 17 yr in the state of ct they own a house together and have a 14yr old daughter together they have never been legely married. she is very unhappy with him, he is very abusive, mostly verbal and she has had enough and wants out. ALL she wants is him 2 buy her out of the house...half the equety but he wont. The daughter wants to stay with him. she is afraid if she leaves she want get her money. what does she do?Has there ever been a case like this that she can refer to. she has talked 2 many lawyers and none of them say they can help. what can she do? anything at all will help.she has called ,any lawyers including family law and no1 can help..ty

She would have to file a partition suit (real estate attorney) to either force the house to be sold or to force him to buy her out. Unfortunately those suits tend to be quite expensive unless the other party simply gives in.

Otherwise, she can stay there and live her own life. Its just as much her house as his, he cannot evict her, ever, and she has every right to live there.

She can invite friends over, have parties/guests, (nothing that would put her child at risk of course) and generally be as independent as she likes. If he is physically abusive she can call the cops.

How is the house they have resided in titled? She has no marital property rights and would only have a right to demand a buy out IF she is in title.
