Question

I'm from Ohio, and my question is: the birth certificate was sent to the health dept. with the father left blank. Can the mother go and have the father section filled in later without the man's consent that she is adding? and if so, what recourse does that man have?

in michigan, and i believe that most states are the same, a woman cannot put a man's name on a birth certificate unless he signs an acknowledgement of paternity. unless, the couple is married, of course.

Just some friendly advice. If the child your are talking about is yours. I would advise you to go ahead and have a paternity test done to prove it, because one day you WILL be hit with papers ordering paternity and support. Even if you have never seen the child or ever hear from the mother of the child. That is what my husband and I are going through now. He doesn't even know what his child looks like or where she is living but has always wanted this child.
Also to let you know my husband and this woman were never married they lived together she got pregnant and moved to a different state, he has never heard from her to this day.
