friend living with me

What is the name of your state? Ohio

I have a friend who is in the process of a divorce and she needs somewhere to live for a while . . . . . . or forever. She is going to come away from this marriage with a lot of debt.

If I let her live here and split expenses with me, is there any way that I could become responsible for any of her past debt? If she lives here and splits expenses, could she ever claim any of my property?

Thank you.

You know, the best thing you could do is not let her live there.

But if you insist on it, then make a complete list of your agreement. You keep one signed copy and she keeps one signed copy. Make sure you include about how to get rid of her.

Q: If I let her live here and split expenses with me, is there any way that I could become responsible for any of her past debt?

A: Yes; that would happen if you agree to be responsible for it.

Q: If she lives here and splits expenses, could she ever claim any of my property?

A: You can sue anyone for anything at anytime for any reason. Whether you win is something I don't know.

Ugh. I am really trying to find another place for her to live and she is working on that, too, but I just don't know what to do with her.

I have just got to not let her stay here even temporarily.

We are both in our late 50's. I am debt free.

No, there is no way that you could become responsible for any of her debt, and no, there is no way that she could have a claim on any of your property. She would be your tenant.
