Help Protecting My Husband

State of Residence: Kansas
I lost my job as the economy was taking a nose dive, and though I earnestly look daily, and have interviewed several times, my location coupled with the increasing numbers of the unemployed has as yet kept me among them. Naturally, I have bills that I cannot pay. One in particular, a credit card, is the reason for my post. I originally applied for the card because I needed a credit card to order text books online for my internet degree program. As a courtesy, I requested a second card for my husband. My ignorance of the credit world made my gesture of generosity into a serious liability. I was unaware of the fact that the company listed my husband as a co-cardholder until the account went into collection. By then, it was too late. Here's the crux of the issue: he never gave consent for the application, did not sign the application, never charged a dime on the account, and never benefitted from my purchases. Furthermore, though they threaten to garnish his wages to pay the debt, no bills or collection notices have come in his name. How can I make sure he isn't made to pay? His salary is the sole source of income for our family of four, and having his wages garnished will put our family's meager finances in jeopardy (I know, because his wages were garnished last spring to pay a medical bill of mine, and the resulting loss of income caused him to take out another bank loan to make our mortgage payments and other miscellaneous household expenses). Please, Please, can someone help? I know Kansas is not a community property state, but what else can I do?? Thanks!
