Husband left wife with all debt

What is the name of your state? North Carolina
My husband left me with all the debt to pay. He took what he wanted and I do not know where he is. We have been married for 20 years. I think I have to claim bankruptcy. We do not own a house. We do not have children. Our salaries are the same. What can I do?

My response:

Is your name on the debts? If not, they are not your liability or responsibility. If, however, your name is on the debts, perhaps you might want to try getting a better paying job and start paying the debts.
