I married a hyphenated name - can i just take one part?

New Jersey
just got married. Husband's full legal last name is LACHMAN-WOLBERG. I would like to take his name now, but only take WOLBERG. Is this possible? He cannot legally change his name because he is French and added the WOLBERG after his mother died. Cannot legally drop LACHMAN. But he would like to. Can't I just be Sue WOLBERG? I have called everywhere and everyone gives me different answers. Some tell me i have to take whatever is his legal last name. others say i can take whatever i want.
Thanks for helping-

You can change your name to whatever you want. And I see no reason why he can't change his name to whatever he wants, unless he's bound by some funky French law.

Just as an FYI. My ex is from Italy, and there, you are not allowed to change you name. However, once he became a US resident he changed his first name here (shorted it) and it was perfectly legal. He wasn't bound by Italian law at that point.
