I recently found out that my elderly father's surname was altered (an extra L added) by the Army when he enlisted in 1943. It sounds the same as it did but is spelled incorrectly based upon his birth certificate.
Dad told me that he never bothered to legally change it and has just used it as the Army spelled it.
He met my mother, and English citizen, while in Germany and married her in 1947 using the misspelled surname. She became a naturalized citizen of the US before I was born in 1953...with the misspelled surname.
My maiden name, on my birth certificate, is also spelled the way the Army altered dad's surname - with the additional L.
Are there problems surrounding this issue?
