Incompetent Parents

My parents reside in Florida. My Father has Alzheimer’s and is in need of constant care. My mother is no longer able to care for him. She has high blood pressure, recently had a mild stroke - all because she thinks her medication is not covered by Medicaid. She is no longer making rational decisions about health care, finances, etc. During her stroke-related hospital stay, the social workers offered to arrange care for my father, but she declined. She is under the (I believe false) impression that she will lose all of his SSI benefits once he is in a care facility. Will medicaide/medicare cover expenses for his care? Will they take all of his SSI benefits, leaving her with the pittance she draws for herself? Do I need to get guardianship if she refuses to seek care for him? If I were to get Power of Attorney, will that obligate me to whatever debt they have accrued?

Medicade will cover some

Medicade will cover some if not all of your father's care facility expenses- you will have to call your local medicade office to find out specifics. The SSI benefits he gets which are probably not very much to begin with, will not even meet the max cap income to be denied medicade care. As a matter of fact, I know because my grandfather was diagnosed with Alhezimer's, and is currently in a very nice facility and medicade is paying for it- plus he still recieves SSI and Veteran's Disability checks- which goes to my grandmother's expenses. So your mother shouldn't worry unless medicade in your state denies him- which I cant see how if his SSI is his only form of income.
