Man's Name Change Through MarriageWhat is the name of your state? Pennsylvania I will be getting married late this year or ealy next year. I was planning on changing my last name to my fiancee's. I find out that a man can not legally change his name in 44 states and requires a court order along with fees and over a month of process. I find this totally discriminating. There are 6 states that do allow a man to legally change his name through marriage and one of them is New York. Now I live in PA and already viewed NY's marriage policy and residency in NY is not a requirement. If I get married in NY, then I should be able to change my name legally on my SS card, license, etc shouldn't I? |

| He can change it -- just not strictly due to getting married.

| You could always sue to be able to change your name through marriage.

| That's what one guy is doing in California already and another person in another state as well. It's the men who don't have the equal rights now. |

| But back to my original question. If I get married in NY, then I should be able to change my name legally on my SS card, license, etc shouldn't I without having to file the petition process in PA? Last edited by Apophis; 07-26-2007 at 12:42 PM. |

| Yes. You must also follow the proper procedures and pay the proper fees.

| We don't get to "avoid" the law because of our opinion, though.
