Married-Now changing both our names...

What is the name of your state? California.

My husband and I have been married for about 4 months. I did not take his name because we had agreed on petitioning in court for legal name changes for the both of us. We will be changing our whole names, and have a shared lastname. The clerk mentioned something about changing our birth certificates. Are we required to change our birth certificates? Is it advisable... how do we prove we're married if both our birth certificates show our new names?

I'm not sure how to go about this, but I want to make sure we don't get caught in any snags when dealing with creditors, bank, employment, etc.

I appreciate any feedback.
