Marrying a non-citizen

What is the name of your state? California

I am getting married next month in Nigeria. One of the reqiuirements is that I prove that I have never married. How do I go about getting a certificate of spinsterhood, or a something that says I have never married?

Ooooooooh hon - I would be SO careful. Lots and lots of scams like this going on. You may well be better off if you hold off on the wedding until he can legally get to the US on his own.

We don't know Nigerian law.

Do not go to Africa.

This is just the kind of narrow minded responed I did not want to see. You are judging someone before your know them. I am not being scamed, I know who I am marrying, and all I ask was for some advice on how to get a certificate stating that I have never been married. If this was a scam i would not have had to go through 5 months of INTERIGATION by the Nigerian Government. So please keep all negavtive thoughs and comments to yourself. And answer the question that I posted.

My response:

When you figure out how to prove a negative, please let us know. I've been trying to find that answer for years!

I see I am getting nowhere with this question, so I will try and rephrase it.

When a couple marry in the United States do they have to prove that they are really single? I know that if you are Divorce and you want to re-marry, you do have to prove that the divorce is final. Is the same process needed when you are marrying for the first time?

Go away. We stuck a fork in it and we're done with you.

In the US you merely need to assert that you have never been married when you get a marriage license.

However, Nigeria may have some other proceedure or requirement that is different. Since we know nothing about Nigerian law (as you have already been told) we can't help you with that.

Nigeria is a hotbed of scams targeting Americans. But go ahead.

Wait a minute! Back in August, you were ALREADY married to this guy. http://forum.freeadvice.com/showthread.php?t=269859 So how about finally telling us the real story instead of playing games? Assuming you actually want help.
