los angeles, california: my friend's mother is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. Her health/mental condition has deteriorated to a point where her husband can no longer care for her properly at home. The facility they have applied to insists that she must come in voluntarily. The mother doesn't think she's sick and is not volunteering. I thought I heard that a family can have a member committed without that member's consent. Is this true, is there any recourse for the family?
