Money in individual bank accounts

If a couple has been separated for a year (living apart), both working with separate bank accounts and decide to get a divorce, will the money in both bank accounts be considered joint property and divided equally or will it be considered separate property and each able to keep the money in their individual bank accounts separate in an equitable distrbution state?
