more info about situation(Getting married need some advise))The man that I am marrying has spent the last several years cleaning up his financial mess. But things such as past due child support are still remnants of his prior life. I only need to know the ramifications of how this will affect my assets and income. Thanx |

| This will not affect your assets or income, as long as you keep your assets and income in your name only. If he owes past due child support, and you file taxes jointly, you fill file an Injured Spouse form to receive your share of taxes back. If he owes past due taxes, and you file jointly, you will file an Innocent Spouse Relief form. Your other option is to file separately, and you can avoid this hassle, but plan on getting less back or possibly even paying. Figure it out both ways and see which works best for you. Keep all checking, savings, credit cards, titled properties, etc. separate from him.

| Just another point.. Filing injured spouse does not always mean you will get all your refund back either. It all depends on how much income you contribute to the household and if their are children involved. |

| My husband has not seen a tax refund in 4 years, (cs arrears) eventhough he's current on support. I have always filed separate, and get my full refund every year. The house is in my name, and we have separate checking/savings, as my direct deposit paychecks go into my account. We then split all household finances. His cs obligation in no way effects my income/assets. Works great. I've noticed you have posted this concern quite a bit. i just have 1 (tiny) question: Are you somehow looking for an excuse not to marry him? Just wondering. |
