movie raised question

texas. i sas "the next best thing" (the madonna movie) where she raises her child for 7 or 8 yrs with the believed gay father (they had a one-night stand). When she decides to get married with another guy, she takes the son and wins custody b/c the gay 'father' turned out to not be the father after all.
Could something like this happen? where years later the father could lose custody rights b/c he discovered he was not the father?
