My Rights

What is the name of your state? NJ
My wife and I got married last year and I am now a stepdad. My daughters bio-dad rarely calls, or has any contact with her. Here's my question what rights do I have over her education decisions, or medical care? Just in case anything should happen to my daughter can I authorize medical care? I emailed my daughters school today and will they actually call me or respond to it or just call her mother?

Thanks for using the search function to answer this extremely common question.

Sorry about that but so far I haven't been able to find anything specific to NJ. I found NY, PA, UT, etc. nothing for my state as the post for newbies states the laws differ by state. When I try to search by NJ I can't because too few letters. Using New Jersey doesn't work either. Jersey works and I didn't get anything specific to my question.

Try the question just below yours. Try any question about stepparents rights.

You have just about as much legal authority as the guy driving the UPS truck...

You are a legal stranger to the child. You have no legal rights whatsoever. You have no right to make any decisions regarding your stepchild, educationally, legally, anything. If your stepchild gets hit by a bus tomorrow, god forbid, you have NO say in what happens.

And stop emailing your stepchild's school, you have NO right to do that or to that info! They will likely inform the mother, if they bother to respond at all. You are NOT this child's parent.
