Name change

I have been trying to get my name changed back to my maiden name...even before I began the divorce preceedings or seperated. My employer will NOT allow a name change with out a marriage license or a divorce decree. I was able to retain my maiden name for social security but am unable to do so with the DMV in California. I was under the impression that a person could change their name, to ANYTHING, so long as they established that there is no intent to commit fraud. Any ideas. I have been wanted to change my name for a long time now, especially at work, where there is personal significance to me. Why can't I get my name back !!!!!!!
