Name Changing

When I became pregnant, I told the father of the unborn child, he left and never returned. He had accused me of sleeping with someone else. The day after my son was born I called him, asking him if he was going to take care of his son or do I have to take him to court. He started doing something for his child. He never took him to his family until he was about 2 years old. I had went to the court to get child support but was unable to serve him with the court papers. I didn't want the police involve in something I felt could be dealt with in a better matter. Well, I sat down with the father and told him that these paper were for me to take him to court. He started taking care of him more. He started taking his son more. There was an incident where the child fell down some stairs in the father's house. When the child was returned the father never informed me of this large burises on the child's chest. Once seeing these bursies, I asked the father what happen? The father became upset and started saying that he is not going to be taking care of a child who doesn't have his last name. I had sent for the papers for the father to change the child's last name when the child was 3 months old. The father said to leave the name as is and never sign the papers. Now after the incident the father is refusing to do somethings for the child. My son is scare of the father. Now he run and hides when he come over. I don't want the father to be out of the child's life so I did let him come over and visit but the child runs. Now the father want the name change. I told him to give me a good reason for this, or that we can add his name to the child's previous ast name. He claim that he is going to take the child from me and that I don't know his family.
Please help me, what can be done to resolve this problem. What would the court do?

His disappearance should of gave you a clue to let it be that way. Whatever you do, don't change that childs name. The father will have rights and power and will start controlling you more. If you can, let the father stay OUT of the childs life, it sounds, by the childs reaction to his father for the better.
Good Luck
