What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon

I get a call from my cousin this a.m., advising she was looking at her birth certificate (in S.D.) from 1933 and just now noticed her first name was written as Loraine. She has been using Lorraine for 80 years for everything. SSA (she has a card but no benefits as she worked for a state agency and has a pension); driver's license; pension plan, mortgage, marriage license......etc.

Her kid thought she should petition a court to correct the spelling to Lorraine. My thought was to leave well enough alone.

What do you think.... ?

Thanks

As she has been using her name "Lorraine" for all these years...What is the big deal to "correct" it now? And does she know you are posting her legal business on the net????

Well.....we did not know about it being a big deal. That is why we asked. Could be some $12.00 hour legal assistant or municipal dope would do something to alert**************.immigration? Homeland Security or **************? You never know how stupid some people can be. Than again....maybe you do.

Yes, DW knows about posting her legal business on the net. Maybe some dope legal assistant will do this. Sound familiar?

Anyway this is a forum to ask dumb questions**************... and you really should switch to de-caf.

Thanks for all your helpful jibes.

Why do you think they're alert immigration or Homeland Security?

Drop the hyperbole.

There is the possibility that the ABA or federal/state entities have been asked to scan or report any name change. Not saying this is an absolute, but as I said, there are a lot of $12.00/hour clerks who would take it upon themselves to do-------who knows what with a name change request. That is why I recommended to leave things alone.

Hyperbole is not a bad thing. It is "an intentional exaggeration not intended to be taken literally"

Question.

Was your cousin born in the US? If not, is she a citizen? If so, was she an ex-pat born elsewhere or was she naturalized? If naturalized, when?

There is a reason I am asking.

Does Lorraine know that the "person" posting for her on the net seems to suffer from some type of mental illness?

The OP seems to indicate that the person in question was born in South Dakota (S.D.)

Yes, cbg. Born and raised in South Dakota.

I'll be off line for a couple of hours. I made an emergency appointment with a mental health specialist. Apparently I'm not doing too well.

She is 80 years old. I cannot imagine any reason why she should bother.

If she was born and raised in the US, and the only thing we're talking about is a variant spelling of her first name, she's not going to be on any Federal or state agency's radar. Unless she is notified that the discrepancy is causing an issue somewhere, she is going to be perfectly fine leaving well enough alone.

OK, back from my appointment. I passed with flying colors.

I mean, really. It was only the 1 in 10,000 chance that some dumb clerk or legal assistant would do something stupid in the internet record keeping area; and that another stupid civil servant would pounce upon this to make brownie points with his or her supervisor. Or worse yet, think they were performing a Public Service.

Other than that, I am at peace with the world. And an especially Merry Christmas/Happy Holiday to Blue Meanie
