Oregon - I am not married but been together over 20 years. Jointly we are about 120 thousand in debt, want my name off debt and want out. Mother in law has taken over, i just exist in my home, significant other is lazy and on probation, I am in deep, what can I do. I want to be free and clear so I can get on with my life. I dont want to cause anyone any hardship, want to do whats right so I can somehow figure out how I can get my own place. My income is only enough for my own little bills including 200.00 per month for rent. If i move out (When I am able) i will only be able to afford about 200.00 per month if that. I will always care about significant other but have had enough. no one really cares about me here anyway except my son. Have had enough of the lazieness, mother in law abuse, etc. Significant other has mother handle bills for him. What are my legal rights? what can I do to get my name off debts, then, what can I do to find a place i can afford. I have a german shepherd, a blind and deaf poodle and 3 cats that mean the world to me and cant give up. i also have a mustang cobra maybe i could re finance for cheaper payments. I realize i may need to trade in for cheaper car but trying to hold on to what i have left. need help and advise.

My response:

Normally, I would never suggest this - - however, I have one word for you: Bankruptcy.

Then, all of the debt shifts to him and Mom, and they can do nothing about it. A little "gotcha" for Mom.

You can leave any time you want. You're not married. So, go see a BK attorney, spend $800.00, and get out of debt.
