Paternity

What is the name of your state? Maryland

I had a daughter two years ago and her fathers name was never put on the birth certificate. Her father and I recently got married and we would like to add his name to the birth certificate and have her take his last name. Will he have to get a blood test done to establish paternity or can he just sign a form establishing his paternity. Please Help.

I'm not a lawyer

I'm pretty sure you can go to the courthouse and add his name to the birth certificate. I don't think they'll demand a paternity test unless they think some fraud is involved.

Afterwards you cannot just start calling the child by her new name. A court will order the name change. It should be fairly simple.

From what I understand...if both of the parents agree on who the child's father is, his name can be added to the birth certificate without a PT. I agree with Sean that the court won't order a PT unless fraud of some sort is suspected.

You don't even have to go through court, you can go to your local county's department of Human Services/Bureau of Vital Statistics, and ask for a form, fill it out with both your signatures, and send it in. It takes awhile, (approx. 6-8 weeks), but it can be done. They will send you a new birth certificate with the revised information.
