Question of name being changed during divorce of parents. Need help!

What is the name of your state? South Carolina but happened in North Carolina

Child's name listed on parent's divorce papers as Debra Jane with birth date May 6, 1956. Was always told and SS card reads Deborah J. (which she thought was Jean) born December 6, 1956. What can be done to find out correct information. NC vital records has already been contacted and told it would take 6 to 8 weeks to get information. What other avenues can be looked at to gain correct information. Are attorney's on the divorce papers responsible for authenticity of document? Should the attorney's be contacted? Should divorce papers still be on file from Nov. 30, 1959. (We have a copy.) What needs to be done, is attorney necessary, and what needs to be corrected (SS card, etc.). should any other avenues be addressed.

submitted for co-worker.

so is your co worker wondering if it was a typo? She could contact the attorney's who handled the divorce, also in my state divorce records are public and since she was the minor involved in the papers she should be able to go to that county courthouse and ask for the records.

The attorney's probably didn't ask for any proof of when she was born and the courthouse may not have either, however, if she has her original birth certificate (which shouldn't take too long to get) that would be your best bet!

One other suggestion is to take her birth name and go to the hospital where she was born and sign a request for all hospital records...that will have her birth records and name and date of birth.

If your friend goes here HHS in north carolina can expedite the service, but i am not certain how quickly...it does cost quite a bit and you need a credit card. http://www.schs.state.nc.us/SCHS/certificates/rush.html
