Originally posted by lisa hefner this is a question for a male friend of mine. he says the babys not his, she says it is. he called the hospital and they said a test would be almost $500. which he doesn't have. she wants his name on the birth certificate. he says no way until he knows for sure. she hasn't been very faithful. he knows this(so do i). we live in Georgia. is there a cheaper way to go about this? is there a legal document that he can contest with? he lives in a small country town where you have to pay just to talk to a lawyer. so to speak. any advise would be greatly appriciated. he doesn't think there is anything he can do but i know theres got to be something. he is so worried that later on she'll say "oh it's not really yours" and its also putting a strain on his fiance too(my best friend) so please any advice.
thanks so much

My response:
Get a good book at your bookstore concerning paternity issues. For very little cost, he can file a Petition for Paternity in the Family Law court. In fact, if he meets the guidelines for low income, the filing fee can be waived altogether.
The court will order a Paternity Test at taxpayer expense. Then, if the child is not his, no other charges will be made. If it turns out to be his child, he will be charged monthly payment to reimburse the State.
