Question

Safety of Children

I live in the state of California

My question is at what age can a child(ren) be left unattended at home alone for an extended period of time?

I know maturity has a lot to do you it. But what is the general consentation?

My response:

"consentation?"

Do you mean "consensus" ?

Anyway, what is your definition of "an extended period of time?"

That would depend. Always more then 20 mnutes and on most occassions at least 4 hours or more. On a couple of times that I am aware of the whole day (at least 8/9 hours) without an adult in the house.

There is no state law in California governing what age a child must be in order to leave them home alone. A woman was convicted of leaving her 8 year old daughter home all day while she went to work. A court of appeals overturned that conviction. So, in all actuallity....the child can be young as 8 according to the courts.
