Separation from parents - General QueryWhat is the name of your state? NA Hi! I am an unmarried 25 years old male from India. I want to seek separation from my parents, which means I would like to change my name, passport, other Voter I card etc. In my present passport, the name of my parents is mentioned, which I want to get deleted,a nd similarly in other such documents. I don't know about India, as the info is not so freely availiable, but, in genreal, would like to know what is the view on such things in US, i.e. if a person wants to break all ties what so ever with his parents then Is there a legal procedure for that? I s there a possibility of not mentioning the parents/guardians name anywhere at all, which means changing or not using surnames etc? Please advice. Thanks, |

| Yes, in the US you are an emancipated adult at 25. You have no legal obligation to your parents and are free to more anywhere you wish and to legally change your name. You do not need to maintain contact- that is as you wish. You would not need to file anything legally (other than changing names, if desired) as all you need to do is seperate yourself IF you are an adult of legal age (18 or older). AS to what YOU need to do, being in India, I haven't a clue, as we can only discuss US Law.

ThanksHi! Thanks for the information. I actually wanted to know specifically about things like passport and all, i.e. is it mandatory to mention parents/guardian name in passport, social security number (may be). As I find it mandatory in India at many places like in passport and all. Thanks. |
