Spousal Responsibility

Colorado. Soon after marrying my husband (2 years ago) I learned that he had a mountain of debt. I have nightmares that if anything should ever happen to him I will be responsible for his credit card debt, loans and mortgages. It would ruin me! Would I be responsible?What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

You are not responsible and can never be responsible for his premarital debt.

However, any assets that you own jointly with him could be subject to seizure. Therefore, you should keep all assets and accounts separate.
