step parents rights

what are the rights of a step- mom who has four stepchildren?
My husband (their father) had a notorized document stating that I was able to sign and abtain any documents, medical treatments, deal with schools, etc, some people recognize this document and some do not. (which causes him too take off of work). What can we do so I can have the authority with no questions to do what is necessary for the kids? Their mother rarely sees them. But will not give up her rights to them.

You have just ran into what many Step-parents have ... no legal rights. It just depends on who is there when you request and if they really dig. Some things I can get...tis great having the same last name. My stepchildren are taken to doctors, dentist whatever without a question but DAD signs for all requests. Many times it doesnt mean he leaves work...that is what a fax machine is for. We play that alot. We do have rights though...and the kids benefit for it. You have the right to treat them as your own, to love them, support them, and give every oppurtunity to them as you would do any child. Tis a fristrating role at times- step parent but I sure wouldn't change it! I have two more awesome kids that wouldnt be in my life any other way. If this is the only frustrating thing then you are trully blessed!
