Teen-Age Emancipation From Parental Control

What is the name of your state? Kentucky

My husband's niece is seventeen and pretty wild. I am wondering what would be required in order for her to be considered emancipated.

Is this something that is still granted in cases with some teenagers?

She comes and goes pretty much as she pleases. She quit school and has a job at a fast food place. She disappears for days at a time. Her mother is close to turning her over to the courts.

Some states, not all, will legally emancipate a teenager in certain circumstances. While the specifics vary with the state, in general it will be required that the teenager have the permission of the parents and that the teen is COMPLETELY able to support him/herself with NO assistance. No living with friends or relatives - no living with a boyfriend; if they can't pay rent, food, transportation costs, etc. on their own, they can't be legally emancipated.

Off hand I don't know whether Kentucky will emancipate a teenager at all - as I said, many states don't, and some others will only do so on a very limited, case-by-case basis. Whether the courts would consider emancipating a teen in the circumstances you describe is not something I'd want to guess.

She's 17....she will be 18 soon and will automatically emancipate. Bide your time.
