| I am a unmarried mother who has a 6 month old daughter. I am wondering what are the "general" legal rights regarding my daughter. My daughter's father's name is on the birth certificate. My daughter shares both my last name and her fathers last name put together. My daughter sees her father on a regular basis. My daughter's father is helpful and he helps support his daughter, but he does not pay child support because he is going to college. He tells me he will pay when he is done college. We do not have any legal papers regarding visitation. I am would like some information about my right as a mother. What can I do? What can't I do? Thank you, I would appreciate any helpful comments. I live in Canada now, But I am moving to NJ!!!!!!!!!!!! [Edited by EMT on 01-27-2001 at 11:54 PM] |

My response: Sorry, we don't do Canadian law, eh ? However, next year, the United States is planning on annexing Canada as our 51st State, and throwing your Prime Minister out of office. Don't make us take over by force. Canada will be assimilated - - resistance is futile. IAAL |

I know you are. But, we don't do Canadian law. I mean, how many ways can I explain that to you ? And, all because you're moving to New Jersey, doesn't mean that Canadian law won't come into play in your matter. What can I tell you ? We don't have any Canadian lawyers on this site. IAAL |

| Why don't you just have your arrangement made legal? I don't know about in Canada of course - But my ex and I weren't married and he was paying me support and doing visitation and all that, but who knows what could happen unless you have something on paper. I told him I wanted to get it legal to protect us both and he had no problem with it. We discussed what agreement we would want and went to court (there is some free legal aid type thing we used and they did the writing up and filing of the papers). The judge signed it and now we both have it in case we ever need to use it (who knows when someone may decide not to be nice anymore). Just an idea. |
