unwed minor sons parental responsiblilities


my son is 17 and going to be a father in a couple weeks. Is he responsible for hospital bills or are we as his parents responsible. Girlfriend does not want to put name on birth certificate becuase of this so that she can receive medical benefits.Please help this is putting such a strain on everyone as my son wants his name on birth certificate. Can his name be put on birth certificate at a later time and if so is there a time frame. We live in the state of illinois

You grandson will have to go through the paternity process if this girl does not want his name on the birth cert. But she can still get the medicaid coverage even if his name is on it as long as she is not living with him. He would need to be at the hospital when the baby is born to sign paperwork for his name to be put on the cert. and if not he and his legal parent can go to the local child support agency after the birth of the baby and sign a paternity statement which is make into a court order showing him as the legal father.
